Proposed Change in the Role of Government

Real change comes from the bottom up, not from the top down. In seeking to help those in need, the government should look first at charities and community groups that have a track record of success. The government should support these private and community based efforts first and foremost because they work. The government should also promote them because the challenges we face are often greater than the resources we possess. Our local efforts sometimes lack scale, our good intentions sometimes lack resources and sometimes volunteerism is not enough. A role for government in these changing circumstances should be as follows:

  • Energize private action, not control it, by identifying what works and helping bring good ideas to scale.
  • Resources should be distributed wisely, not just to governmental institutions, but to charities and neighborhood healers who need them most.
  • Organizations receiving resources should not be forced to compromise their core values.
